Second Best isn't so Bad [Dec. 3rd, 2009|08:23 am]

untoward

Are you looking for the perfect Christmas gift for someone you want to confuse with about 300 mixed signals?

The second Softer World book is here. It is called Second Best isn't so Bad and you can buy it right now if you like! 244 full colour pages (even the black and white images are printed in glorious full colour, for no reason at all! We are all about excess.) and at the end of the book there's a collection of the original black and white photocopy versions of A Softer World that we made in an all night copy shop with a stack of photos and an old typewriter. This section is called "Not bad for a first try."

Also, the first Softer World book, Truth and Beauty Bombs is up for sale on the Topatoco site as well! Buy them separate, or together for a discount! What kind of crazy world is this!?

(also, we included all the alt texts. How? IT IS A MYSTERY!)

A Softer World Sits Around the House [Dec. 2nd, 2009|11:40 pm]

there's a new comic and it's here:

asofterworld.com

AND AND AND !!

Our second collection, A Softer World: Second Best isn't so Bad, is available for purchase! You can also now buy the first collection, or go nuts and get both.

Second Best isn't so Bad is pretty great you guys. We've included all of the alt texts, and there's a special section with some of the first comics Joey and I made, back at the Kinkos in Halifax! It's like a journey into history. Gosh.

Going a bit loopy. I've been on campus trying to get my thesis code straightened up from like 9:30 am until now (6:30) and I'm about done looking at it for the day. Haven't started studying genetics yet, but I think I need a 95 or something to improve my grade... it's a long reach, so it probably doesn't matter how much I study. I figure I can get that done tomorrow before the exam (1 pm?).

For some reason, this code works fine with one image, but when I use this other image (which is just the first image without a rotation), it doesn't line up. I have no idea why. I mean, what's really important is that my fudicial points (or POIs if you like GPS) seem to be lining up. Some of the things the image processing toolbox does are weird, and there's at least one thing I did earlier on to make things easy that ended up making things tougher later down the line.

Oh you want to look at my code? Ok! )

Let me know if you also want copies of my images so you can see how they line up.

UPDATE: Ummmmmmmmm..... turns out my genetics exam is on Friday. I guess that's a good thing, maybe!? I like having the extra study time, but really I was looking forward to being Done tomorrow afternoon.

BLaarghl. Finally got all my transcripts sent out from UF and FAU, and sent on all my GRE scores. Five universities, $210 so far. Then there's also the application feeds, which I think are $45-$90 a pop. If I'm lucky, I'll impress some people and they'll pay to fly me out for an interview and I'll get a free vacation. More likely is maybe two places will be interested in me and I'll be shelling out my own money. Either way, vacaaation wooo!

Still gotta finish up these applications, though. But first, more thesis work!

For some reason I thought 2012 didn't do well at the box office. Time to throw away my faith in humanity.

When people are talking about pets and they say DSH, they are either pretentiously talking about german shepherds, or they are talking about cats.

Time to get moving it's already 9:20!!!

PS: I had a dream that I got a steampunk guitar and I was pretty good at playing it. It had a crank to somehow manually act as like a sustainer and distorter. I don't even know.

What a horrible night to have a curse. That's pretty much the catch phrase for this week.

Also, since everyone is feeling down because it's the end of the semester and the start of the holidays and holy crap am I busy, this cute video's been making the rounds!

Now, I know this can't compete, but here's some video I took on my cell phone of Barkley trying to play with a squirrel. The squirrel comes up to the parents' back door because they give it peanuts. About halfway through I realized the phone didn't have video set to the highest resolution, so I fixed it.

Today was not nearly as productive as I'd planned. The stop at the parents' house, which was supposed to take like a half hour, ended up being 3.5 hours. I got some video and pictures of Barkley at least I guess. This upcoming week is going to be soooo busy, though.

Genetics exam on Monday, and genetics final on Thursday. Thesis committee meeting on Thursday. University applications need to be mailed out probably by a week from Monday. And I am still trying to figure shit out for my thesis and for this other microfluidics project. I really wanted to be on campus from like 2 to 7 today.

The new plan is to go to bed soon so I can get to FAU at like 9 am and just spend all day there working.

366 days later [Nov. 28th, 2009|08:00 pm]

To think it was over a year ago that I was laying on the asphalt of the bail-bonds place changing a tire at 1:30am on the way to the hospital... Who would have thought time could slide by so quickly? (alright... so every other person on the planet who's had a child, but who cares! this is my blog, and you get the point) It's hard to imagine he turned one yesterday, and what a blessing the last year has been. We've been cruising back over all the video and pictures we've taken since he was born, and it's mind-boggling to watch how quickly he's changed. I'm certain it will all slow down now (right? RIGHT? someone please confirm this), but we're going to continue to treasure each day. Amy and I picked out a wicked slide/sports toy for him, and he didnt hesitate to climb up it all on his own. Matter of fact, he told me after this he's embarrassed to have me "hovering," but we didnt need a trip to the ER on his b-day so I kept at it and assured him it won't be the last time this happens.

He's our birthday boy.

Later during the party, we were all chomping burgers and Alex heard there was cake. Then, he said he would hear NO MORE until he got some of said cake on his plate!!

The cake made a quick appearance, and I was once again impressed with Amy's decorating skills.

Joy was restored.

Loads more pictures to thumb through, so maybe mroe updates later. In other news, house should be done on time so we'll be moving in around the 18th of December, Alex has been snuffly lately and so we're hoping he sleeps well today, and I turn 30 in, cripes, less than 2 weeks.

Ordered a cheap $45 mp3 player with a video screen from Best Buy, and, thanks to Arhi, learned about Juice for aggregating my podcasts n shit. And that can link up with Winamp, so I also DL'ed Winamp Lite. Which I think can aggregate podcasts, but whatever! I'm realizing that I have a lot of programs that I don't fully use. That's not inherently a bad thing, but when things get complicated because I try to work several programs together instead of realizing that one program can really do all of it at once, then things start to mess up.

At least now I'm free from iTunes, which bogs down even my monstrous system.

Now how are the kids getting their music these days? I got my parents mp3 players and they want to get music and stuff and it looks like thepiratebay is closed for good. Are there any good bit torrent sites left out there? I heard that streaming music is becoming the popular way to grab songs. Does anyone have suggestions for doing that? (or grabbing audiobooks?)

I am subscribed to 27 podcasts now, so I hope some of them are crappy.

PS I may be getting a cheap-ass $80 music keyboard from Best Buy or something so I can try using that for music. I don't know! I am going crazy from all the school stuff I have to get done.

I totally pwned face on the phone interview tonight. I'm really pumped and I think I really impressed the guy. I will spare you the details. I am really hoping I get this job, because otherwise I will be very sad.

Barcelona is great. We spent three nights here, and in a couple hours I'll be leaving for London again. But I really enjoyed it here. They've got a crazy Bike system where you pay for a year subscription and you can just grab a bike from these racks on almost any street corner, and drop them off anywhere else that has a rack. The racks aren't very big, which seems to me like it might cause troubles during really busy times, but otherwise it's kind of an awesome system.

Here is a review of New Moon that I can get behind! You know what it reminds me of? It reminds me of when Titanic came out and every girl on the school bus saw it like 15 times. I hope they look back now and then and wonder what they were thinking.

On the other hand, I enjoyed Hackers at the time. In my defense, I only saw it once. If anyone asks, though, I saw it ironically.

Zombie Messenger bag:

Topatoco, the people who handle our shirts and prints and that new messenger bag pictured above, have posted the Christmas shipping deadlines for the various methods of having things shipped to you.

Also, almost any print on the site can be bought as a print, if there's one that you think someone will love, or one that really reminds you of them whether it's flattering or not. Christmas is a time for brutal honesty after all.

North weekend [Nov. 22nd, 2009|01:28 pm]

Alex wanted one more trip before he hits the big 0-1 (wait, he's already ONE!!), so we hit the road north. We stayed at Grammy and Grampy's on friday and saturday night and made the most of saturday at the Texas A&M vs. Baylor game. The weather wasnt cooperating at first, having rained all friday and not yet cleared out, but it got nicer as the game progressed. And fortunately, aTm decided to have both a strong offense and defense, winning 38-3!

That night we had to improvise a tub, but he got just as clean as usual.

And then we snuck in to Grammy and Grampy's church for a little while to show off and sing some praise!  (I'm tempted to make some wise remark about how we're getting the better side of Grampy in this picture, but I'll resist... just know that if I HAD made that remark, it's only because I know he would have done the same).

I just woke up from a dream and I am so sad it wasn't real. :( It started out with me helping on Mythbusters. I think I was filling in for Grant, and everyone was getting revolvers for some cowboy stuff and metal plates for armor.

So that's awesome enough already, but then at some point in the dream there everything shifted around and Evan and I were at some show or something (it was related to the cowboy theme). I don't remember exactly what happened but basically a couple guys were being jerks and said something to Evan and he was yelling at them that he and I would be happy to kick their asses once the show was over. And they were like, "ok sure." And then during the show, every time one of them would glance over at Evan he would give them this smile and nod like, "I'm gonna enjoy this." And the guys' smack talk got progressively less.

Afterwards, everyone was filing out except the four of us and like half a dozen people who wanted to see a fight. I looked at my guy and was like, "okay, you want me to kick your ass first then my brother can beat up your boyfriend?" And he's like, "let's do this..." then just walks away to where some of his friends were waiting and they all leave. And I shout, "I'll let you go because you look like Shawn from Mega64 and that's awesome, you're cool."

So Evan's guy is on the stage, which is just raised like 2 feet off the ground, and has a chainlink fence up at about waist height a couple feet back. Evan's on the ground and he's like, "come on, do something." So the guy runs up and tries to kick Evan in the head, but Evan planned the whole thing out and ducks just a little, catches the leg on his shoulder, and pushes the guy backward. The guy hit the fence and Evan just hoists the guy over the fence, where he tumbles away on the ground. And everyone watching is shouting, "that was fucking pathetic, get out of here!" and things like that, and we all laughed.

Then Evan and I got into my car and as I backed out of my parking space I almost hit a truck that was driving by. That would have been embarrassing!

Then I woke up and was sad it wasn't real. On the plus side, I slept from 3 am to 7:30 am so I should be able to get to bed nice and early tonight. Thanks, dream!
